Coming Back From Burning Out
It may sound odd to be 24 and say, “I was on the path of burning out.” In fact, I felt shame about it. I felt like everyone else could do it all, work hard at everything, and land on their feet except me. This isn’t a post to discourage hard work or having seasons of putting your head down and working harder than you ever have. This is a reminder to manage your expectations.
We all have a plate. We can fill it, pile it high, but eventually things will fall off. There is only so much we can do at one time, which is why we all need to prioritize. Now, I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know, and yet, I bet you tend to put unrealistic expectations on yourself, like I have.
Here’s the thing, you can’t do it all. You can do many things. You can do hard things. But you can’t do it all. And that’s okay. In fact, that’s healthy. If you find yourself feeling like you’re failing at everything, maybe the “everything” is too much.
If you are on the road to burning out, turn around. Say no. Say let’s revisit that later. Give yourself grace.
Because your work deserves the best you, your people deserve your best you. Not a perfect you, but a healthy one.
You got this!
